Alice Brock, who helped inspire Arlo Guthrie’s classic ‘Alice’s Restaurant,’ dies at 83

Alice Brock, the Massachusetts woman whose resistance to getting a permit to dump garbage inspired Arlo Guthrie’s 1967 folk classic “Alice’s Restaurant,” has died at 83.

Brock was working as a waitress in 1965 when she and some friends were arrested for illegally dumping trash on someone else’s property. The resulting court case became the basis for Guthrie’s 18-minute song, which has been beloved by generations of fans.

Brock’s story is a reminder that even the smallest acts of defiance can have lasting consequences– and that a good song can immortalize them.
