Top federal prosecutor in New York announces resignation before Trump takes office

Preet Bharara, considered a top ally of outgoing President Barack Obama and an impediment to Donald Trump’s administration, announced his resignation as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York Saturday, defying an order by Attorney General Jeff Sessions to remain on the job indefinitely. Bharara’s resignation comes after several months of tense negotiations between his office and the Justice Department over his future.
